For St. Therese (of Lisieux), heaven is not some faraway place. It is wherever we are (in the cloister or the Far East), and we experience heaven whenever we allow the Lord to come into our souls through the mystery of His divine presence in the Eucharist. In order for us to carry out effectively the paradoxical mission of “staying close” and “being sent,” we must first open our hearts to Him, and receive Him joyfully, as both the anticipation and promise of eternal life with Him.
